He was in a sunken mood when he left his parentsâ house, and it was too late to call Tora once heâd made it to his apartment, so he called her as soon as he opened his eyes early Monday. âGood morning, my friend,â he said cheerfully.
âGood morning to you, Nate.â
âI was hoping you were an early riser.â
âActually, Iâm not,â she said, âunless I have to work the opening shift at my job.â
âOh man⦠Iâm sorry to disturb you. Iâll just call back in a few hours then.â
âWell Iâm awake now. Whatâs up?â
âHow is my friend on this lovely morning?â
She laughed softly. âI see you keep stressing the âfriendâ part.â
He chuckled. âForgive me for not getting back to you last night. I was at my parentsâ house for dinner and fell asleep afterwards.â
âItâs cool. I was only letting you know I didnât see your text until later that night. And this was my weekend to work, so⦠and I was busy.â
âOkay, but when are you free? Since weâre friends now, I want to know when can we hang out?â
She laughed again. âI see Iâve set myself up for this one, huh? Why are you up so early?â
He shook his head and lifted his feet to rest them on the coffee table. She was dodging the question. âIâm gonna go for a run before I head over to the gym. Iâm working late tonight, too. One to ten.â
âYou actually work out before going to train with your clients?â
Chuckling, he said, âWell, yeah. When I train with them itâs at their pace, so Iâm really not working my body very much.â
âI see. I always wondered how that worked.â
âYou wanna go for a run with me?â
âPlease,â she snorted. âI can count on one hand the number of times Iâve exercised in my adult life. The only time youâll catch me running is if somebodyâs chasing me.â
Nate laughed out loud. âYou were definitely blessed with some good genes, but you still want to treat your body right and get some exercise. For your heart. And how do you expect to get away from your chaser? Youâll burnout within the first fifteen seconds.â
âWhatever,â she said. âA light and easy walk is the most Iâll ever do.â
âOkay, well⦠Iâm leaving in about twenty minutes. You wanna meet me at Bear Creek Park?â
âWhat? Iâm sleeping in.â
âCome on, Tora. You will feel so good after getting a few minutes of exercise this morning youâll want to do it again tomorrow.â
âI doubt that,â she said.
âIf you donât then I owe you lunch.â
âI see what youâre trying to do.â
Nate smiled.
âI donât even own something suitable to work out in,â she said.
âOf course you do. All you need is a T-shirt and some shorts. Nice try.â
She laughed and agreed to meet him in a half-hour.
